What does it mean to be “Biblical”? Here you will find:
What is the Bible?
The Bible is God’s Word.
All Scripture is breathed out by God…
2 Timothy 3:16
…knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
2 Peter 1:20-21
Jesus said that God’s Word is truth, and that obeying his Word is like building our house in a rock:
Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
John 17:17
Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Matthew 7:24
The Bible tells us that God’s Word is clear and can be understood even without lots of education or training:
The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.
Psalm 119:130
God’s Word contains both Law (commandments) and Gospel (promises).
God’s Law accuses us and teaches us that we are wrong. It makes us aware of our rebellion against God, our sin:
Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness.
Romans 7:7-8
God’s Gospel gives us faith that we have been made right, justified, because of Jesus’ death and resurrection:
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
1 Corinthians 5:3-5
A Summary of the Bible
- God made everything by his Word. (Genesis 1-2)
By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
Hebrews 11:3
2. Human beings sinned by disobeying God’s Word. (Genesis 3)
…sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned…
Romans 5:12
3. God promised to fix our sin and its consequences. (Genesis 4-50)
“By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”
Genesis 22:16-18
4. God freed the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt and gave them his Law so that we would understand our slavery to sin and how God will set us free. (Exodus-Esther)
“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Exodus 20:2-6
5. God gave us wisdom and songs so we can understand our experience of being sinners who are set free. (Job-Song of Solomon)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalm 119:105
6. God spoke through prophets to prepare and point forward to the coming of Jesus. (Isaiah-Malachi)
Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
1 Peter 1:10-12
7. Jesus, God’s Son, the living Word of God, gave us the Gospel by becoming a man to die for our sins and rise again for our justification. (Matthew-John)
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
1 Corinthians 5:3-5
8. Jesus sent his Spirit, who gathers together the church by giving people faith in God’s Word. (Acts)
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
John 16:13-14
9. Jesus sent Apostles to spread his Word, so that the church and Christians have all we need to live for him. (Romans-Jude)
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.
2 Peter 1:3-4
10. Jesus will return one day to judge the living and the dead. (Revelation)
“Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
Revelation 22:12-13
